Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff is in final negotiations to offload a portion of his ownership stake in the Mercedes F1 outfit.

This transaction estimates the Mercedes team at £4.6bn – an unprecedented figure for a Formula 1 squad – after McLaren were valued at £3.5 billion in a change of ownership structure last September.

The Austrian executive, who holds a 33% stake of Mercedes F1, would sell a shareholding in the region of five percent.

Wolff, aged 53 will remain as team boss and CEO should the deal proceed.

Shareholder Structure

Remaining partners in the team are Mercedes and industrial group Ineos, who each also own one-third of the enterprise.

An official representative stated: "We are providing no comment on this. The management structure of the team stays unaltered, and each shareholder are fully committed to continued achievements of Mercedes-Benz in F1."

Valuation Increase

This arrangement would represent a substantial rise in value of Mercedes F1 after Ineos acquired its share for £208 million in 2022.

The rise reflects the growth in valuations of Formula 1 outfits recently due to the increasing appeal of Formula 1 globally.

This trend was evident with the box-office performance of the F1 movie featuring Hollywood star Brad Pitt, which was released last summer and earned more than $630 million (£458m) at cinemas worldwide.

It is the actor's top-grossing movie and the highest-earning sports movie to date.

Current Performance

The Mercedes team are runner-up in the team standings, behind McLaren Racing, with three races remaining in the current championship.

Their lead driver British driver George Russell has secured victory in 2 of the 21 races so far and is in fourth place in the drivers' championship after McLaren drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, and Red Bull Racing's Max Verstappen.

The team won a record eight consecutive team titles and seven drivers' titles, six won by Lewis Hamilton and one for Nico Rosberg, from 2014 to 2021.
